A native of Wadowice, Poland, Karol Wojtyla became Pope John Paul II in 1978. Among his many accomplishments as pope, he made 104 apostolic journeys outside Italy and promulgated a new catechism. He inaugurated World Youth Day and the World Meeting of Families. John Paul II died on 2 April 2005.
